The food is Excellent! I ordered the 3 meat Plate w: Beef Ribs, Baby Back Ribs, and the Hot Links. It was superb. Seasoning was great. I had corn bread, and baked beans. You can't go wrong. Also suggest the Brunswick Stew w/ jalapeño and regular Hush Puppies. Delicious. I had the order delivered. I wish I were not as hungry as I was because I would have taken a picture. It looked as delicious as it tasted. Try this place out. You will not be sorry.

It's a wonder Johnny Reb's True South has managed to keep its name unadulterated, what with the current climate and all. Perhaps it's the work the proprietress does with the NAACP that keeps the language goblins away. A mason jar with a slit lid sits on the table, a receptacle for cash donations. Slipping some legal tender unlocks a bowl of roasted peanuts for the customer/philanthropist. By snacking on peanuts before your meal, you can aid in the advancement of Colored People. Perhaps the place has kept its name because of its longevity in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. There is a worked-in feel to Johnny Reb's. Their server station has a soda fountain unlike any I've seen. It's basically the soda gun you see in bars, but set in a stationary vertical configuration. Hanging in the dining room is all the ephemera you've seen in TGI Fridays, license plates from across the country and so on; except, and I can't explain why, there's a savoir faire to the décor at Reb's. It seems personal, not manufactured. The same sort of décor would would strike you as performative from any one of the chain restaurants. It feels lived-in. Regulars exchange salutations with staff and ownership. Think 'Cheers,' but with brisket instead of beer, fried chicken instead of Fraser Crane, and Key lime pie instead of Kristie Alley. Reb's has become a sine qua non feature in Bixby Knolls. And this has been the case for some time. The food is good on the whole. It is unfortunate that the chicken and waffles comes with breast, rather than thigh meat. While crisp and well seasoned, you still kind of wish the meat would be juicier. I think they add corn meal to the dredge, which, of course, helps bolster the crunch. The waffle is nicely lite and crisp. Blackened catfish is fresh and cooked perfectly each time I've ordered it. You wish the ham was the Virginia style ham - aged, funky and salty - instead, what you get is the typical ham one finds that has been cured via saline and saltpeter injection. An interesting inclusion in their menu are Texas style breakfast tacos, served with brisket. Some may question the integrity of this place, figuring that the inclusion of tacos on their Southern menu is venal and designed to appeal to certain guests who will only eat tacos. But, to the contrary, the Texas breakfast taco is an entrenched feature of Tex-Mex cuisine, which is part of the broader cuisine of Dixie. Don't believe me? Just ask Gustavo Arellano. The dessert menu is made up of the staples. Peach cobbler is nearly a peach crisp, so golden and crackly is the cake part of the cobbler. As for the peaches, they are the canned variety. This is true, even in August - peach season. And while this may not be very Californian, it is very Southern. Beignets have a crisp browned crust, almost baguette-like, which surrounds a pillowy crumb.

8/21/2024 11:35 am Samia server It would be wonderful to discuss how my husband made an excellent choice in selecting this location. I must commend him for his efforts in finding a new and suitable place. Once we walked in immediately we were greeted by Samia. She kindly showed us to our seats. Drinks were immediately taken after sitting. Drinks- a sprite , diet coke @ lemonade @ $4.25 Let's talk appetizer fried green tomatoes with cornmeal topped with bacon took me back to my childhood.. Samia mentioned it's one of there best items also. Fried green tomatoes with bacon and Chipotle sauce @ $13.95 Our meal let's say the hubby ordered with his eyes. Our meal consisted of. Classic burger side green beans my entire burger was juicy, well done, fully loaded with onions, tomatoes. My green beans were flavorful with bacon bits. @ $17.50 Southern chicken sandwich with bacon, avocado @ $18.95 the chicken was well coated and crispy the chicken was so juicy and well flavored. Jambalaya bowl dry no juice @ $12.99 After all our food the hubby ordered banana pudding & peach cobbler @ $8.50 We all dived in and enjoyed shared bites if each desert even had plenty to take home. The atmosphere was so relaxing, I seen regular customers come in being greeted by thier names and would you like that same Jambalaya today sir was asked. I'll be coming back ... Thank you Samia for giving us a gift card.

Upon entering, we were immediately seated (5:45pm on a Sunday) with lots of options. Then a worker asked us for drink orders quickly as well (+1 pt!). We had to ask for peanuts, which the server, Matt, brought pretty quickly too. We ordered a full plate of onion rings to share, and they came out in less than 5 minutes, crispy/crunchy, with perfect onions inside (sweet, tender, and juicy) and 2 dipping sauces--Chipotle ranch and regular ranch. One of the best suggestions Matt gave us was to order the "Date Night Special" (lots of meats [smoked brisket, Texas hotlinks, BBQ chicken, beef ribs smothered in BBQ sauce, and fried catfish], 3 appetizers [fried okra, fried green tomatoes with lots of crispy bacon pieces on top, and sweet potato fries], 2 sides [mac and cheese and potato salad], choice of 2-biscuits/corn bread/hushpuppies and a shareable peach cobbler with ice cream)--for a price that was about 25%-35% less than if you got everything individually! He even suggested we get the mac and cheese but have it grilled on the stove top griddle. *WOWZA!!!*--crispy, burnt edges, yet creamy and soft macaroni on the inside. 2 of our group shared that meal and I got a grilled shrimp po' boy with a side of grilled mac and cheese. The po' boy had fresh cole slaw, dill pickle chips, and a zippy remoulade sauce. Delicious! The entire dinner was relaxing, but efficient. Everything was great, and service was stellar. Good job, Johnny Rebs!!

I loved the food. The dining room is rustic and "down home". The menu is is exciting to a barbecue lover like me.! The service was just terrific. I had the Texas hot-links sandwich, hot spicy meaty perfection. The potato salad was spot on for cooling the hot from the meat. This is the real Deal! The fried pickles were the best we have had in years. We loved this place!

Want to experience authentic Southern dining without purchasing airfares? You've come to the right place. This restaurant offers an intimate setting with quaint Southern decor, but it doesn't stop there. Southern hospitality is as palpable as the bowl of peanuts in shells begging to be liberated. My cup was always full, and my stomach was soon blessed with some of the best food I've ever had. I had the fried chicken, and my son had the catfish (blackened). We both agreed that it's the best catfish we've ever had. My son is into culinary art, and he was impressed because he understands catfish is notoriously difficult to prepare correctly. The fillet was as tender as they come, with a hint of earthy butteriness that characterizes the essence of this type of fish. The fried chicken was satisfyingly crispy yet juicy on the inside. The sides of grit and potato did not play second fiddle to the main entrees, as they complete the perfect meal. We'll be back for more, that's for sure.
